“I wrote ‘Novocaine’ about the people in our lives that we’ve lost because they just couldn’t let us in. It’s about the loved ones that so desperately needed help but kept us at arms length. It’s about longing to be whatever you need to be in order to save somebody, but they won’t ever let you. There’s not a more helpless feeling than watching someone you care so much about come apart at the seams while knowing there’s nothing you can do about it. ‘You were the fire I can’t contain, so strike the matches, spread the ashes at my feet.”
