Singer Patrick Glover stated of the song:
“‘Broken Throne’ is a deeply personal song to me. It deals heavily with religious trauma, and specifically struggling with the ideology you were born into. I was raised in a church and still carry the lessons and values it instilled in me to this day. But although church is where I first learned of the saving power of love and acceptance, it is also where I learned hate and discrimination of those who are different. I realized that the God I was taught about had no room for hatred, and he didn’t call on us to cast judgement, but to lift each other up.”
Glover also shared some insight on the track’s lyrics, saying:
“So many of the lyrics from ‘Broken Throne’ come directly from my childhood experiences and feel relatable to those with a similar upbringing. The first verse talks about being molded from an early age into blindly thinking a certain way while still questioning it. The second verse touches on feeling lost but continuing to ‘follow the matriarch’ because it’s all you know, and ‘there’s no sign of life in this starlit sky’ reflects knowing the stories but losing their meaning. To me, the breakdown delivers the key message of the song. Jesus said ‘By their fruit you will recognize them,’ meaning our character is not made up of what we say or believe, but by our actions. So when given the choice, choose kindness and compassion always.”
