Guitarist/bassist Davide Tiso offered:

‘Mastering Fire’ is the long mid-tempo song that I selected as the opener for Seven Pathways to Annihilation. I think it perfectly creates the mood for the experimental atmosphere of the album. For HOWLING SYCAMORE it has a surprisingly encouraging vibe and offers one of Jason McMaster’s best vocal performances to date with the band. Inspired by Chuck Schuldiner’s guitar solo, delivering Kevin Hufnagel after the first main riff is simply breathtaking, paving the way for a series of open-hearted riffs, influenced by a kind of mid-range metal we’ve never encountered before. I even hear a little bit of METALLICA! The lyrics are about drawing strength from one’s own scars, recovering the energy that has been given away or taken away, but always with forgiveness and compassion. Here is an excerpt from the opening lines: ‘I breath in the fire of my lost battles /  I feel the blood, sweat and broken wants / I stare at all the days gone wrong / and I forgive.'”
