Frontman Allen Epley recalls of the song:

“‘Dirty Jazz’ was the first song written after we’d written The Egg and was tracked when we were still touring for that big record for us. A thing that I know that has become attached to the Shiner sound is our sense of rhythmic propulsion, not just drum-wise, but layered in guitar and bass parts too. ‘Dirty Jazz’ reflects a common Shiner trait with a 3 on 2 feel that I’ve used in more than a couple of songs along the way: ‘Unglued’, ‘Spinning’, ‘The Egg’, and ‘Genuflect’ from Schadenfreude more recently.”
