Lorna Shore are about halfway through their headlining tour in support of their fifth full-length I Feel The Everblack Festering Within Me (Century Media). If the tour is stopping near you, I suggest you go. While the lineup – which features support by The Black Dahlia Murder, Shadow of Intent, and PeelingFlesh – is made up of extreme metal each brings their own flavor and flair that made for a truly enjoyable show. I caught the show last week at the Yeungling Center in Tampa, FL. Below are some shots from the evening.

I haven’t done a deep dive on PeelingFlesh but have heard a few of the tracks off the “slamming gangster groove” outfit’s – a label they accurately gave themselves – latest EP, PF Radio 2 (Unique Leader). Slam isn’t my preferred genre, but the Oklahoma group’s take is very interesting and translates very well in a live setting.

They were followed by Connecticut deathcore outfit Shadow of Intent, who are also out supporting a new record, fifth album Imperium Delirium (Blood Blast). I have seen the band a couple of times prior to last week and have never been disappointed. This has by far been their best production with strobe and additional lightening that complemented the ferocity of their music. The band aren’t particularly flashy in their performance, but the intensity of the music obliterates the senses. What more can you ask for? That night was especially notable for me personally, because I heard frontman Ben Duerr deliver one of the nastiest pig squeals, it might’ve been a shriek, in recent memory. I wish I could remember what song it was during because it was hands down one of the standout moments of the night.

Directly support for the run is provided by melodic death metal vets The Black Dahlia Murder. The only band on the bill who doesn’t have a new album out this year. Their most recent output is tenth album Servitude (Metal Blade). This was my first time seeing them with Brian Eschbach as their lead vocalist and it didn’t disappoint. They still bring massive energy in their performance and brief banter between songs to keep the crowd going. Their set was mostly retrospective featuring with a majority of the songs taken from their first three records. Regardless, they killed it. I can’t say I’ve ever been let down by The Black Dahlia Murder in a live setting. I’m a little biased, though, because I have been following the band for 20 years and they are easily one of my favorite bands.

The night was my first time catching Lorna Shore live and seeing them live makes me like them more. I have no frame of reference as far as comparing their current live show to anything they did before, but I was impressed. They’ve had an incredible rise since the addition of vocalist Will Ramos about five years ago and they’ve made the most of it with an impressive live production that enhances the experience of their pummeling blackened deathcore. Illuminated by massive monitors, strobe lights, and stage lights showering the arena with visuals that were varied and captivating, the band delivered a phenomenal set that perfectly demonstrates why they’ve climbed the later so quickly these last few years.

Forming in 2009, the group’s hard work and dedication has unquestionably paid off. The fruits of their labor in full display on stage. Undergoing numerous lineup changes, Lorna Shore have stuck it out and are now becoming some of the standard-bearers that every generation of music requires to keep things moving forward.

The tour is continues this Thursday, October 9th in Phoenix, AZ at The Van Buren. Tickets can be purchased at LornaShoreBand.com.
