Vocalist Joey Galletta spoke of the new track, sharing:
“About halfway through the writing process of STRANGE EVIL, I had a major loss in my family. My brother, Nick, passed away totally unexpectedly and it absolutely shook my world. How I dealt with it is the same way I’ve dealt with every other traumatic situation in my life – I turned to songwriting.
STRANGE EVIL became the name of the anonymous character on the artwork – meant to be an open-ended symbol of whatever ‘black cloud’ is looming over one’s life. For me, STRANGE EVIL was the physical manifestation of grief. The entire EP slowly morphed into a conversation between this character and myself.
For the majority of the EP, this conversation is angry, hopeless, and regretful. However, ‘INNOCENT’ is a break from that. This was where I chose to tackle it all head on. It was my attempt to try and explain that Nick did no wrong – he deserved to live a full and happy life.”
