Official press release:
Utah post-hardcore outfit Eidola release their new album, The Will to Power, on Nov. 20 via 3DOT Recordings. The 10-track collection expands the band’s ever-evolving conceptual universe, with today’s release of “Damballah” (https://go.mhe.fm/eidola_damballah) introducing one of its many mythological themes. Vocalist/guitarist Andrew Wells, who is also a member of Dance Gavin Dance, explains
“‘Damballah’ is about transformation through destruction. The idea that sometimes the only way forward is to shed the identity that brought you this far. The serpent itself is an ancient symbol of that cycle of creation and death, wisdom and temptation, shedding and becoming. There’s an acceptance in the song that nothing is meant to remain the same forever, and that evolution sometimes requires you to willingly let go of habits you’ve spent your entire life building.”
Loosely inspired by Nietzsche’s “The Will to Power”, the album explores the nature of power and how it has shaped humanity throughout history and continues to shape the world today. Sonically, the band continues expanding beyond the boundaries of post-hardcore, integrating prog, metal, alternative, and experimental elements into the record.
The making of The Will to Power marks a shift in the way Eidola approached songwriting. At the end of 2025, the band traveled to Los Angeles for six days of writing with producer and engineer Stephan Hawkes (Chelsea Grin). Rather than Wells arriving with a wealth of pre-written material, the entire band worked face-to-face, collaborating on songs in real time and letting them develop organically in the studio. Wells recalls:
“We were capturing these lightning-in-a-bottle moments. Working in-person was just so much fun. As a father now, my excitement and gratitude for what we do together had really increased. I was able to access more emotion and vulnerability than ever before. I tapped into those spaces to philosophize from my own perspective. As a result, The Will to Power became the best representation of what our band is.”
